The Western Digital SiliconDrive III 2.5 PATA is a Parallel ATA version of the WD SiliconDrive III 2.5 SATA drive. WD have provided an option for the older PATA protocol which although is generally slower and doesn't have Hot Plug support for adding a drive with the power still on, has in recent years narrowed the speed gap between itself and SATA to within a 5% margin. The series was introduced in June 2009 and it is WD's first foray into the SSD market, although standout features make it ideal for specific fields including military as well as functioning as a professional business server. The speed has decreased from the SATA version as one would expect with PATA, showing a read speed of 85MB/s and write speed of 60MB/s, although maintaining a 133MB/s burst speed. However the capacities are the same(15GB, 30GB, 60GB, 90GB and 120GB), as well as the 3 million hour MTBF or, mean time between failure and 1000G shock resistance.

Proprietary WD technology is included, extending the lifespan and efficiency including SiSMART which keeps track of worn out and spare blocks, warning you if the drive is going to fail, as well as PowerArmor which safeguards against power surge damage to the drive. As per the company website, the military would benefit from drives like these because of their reliability, and, an extended temperature version is available which increases the operational temperature for use in extreme conditions.
