The Phaeton was intended to spearhead Volkswagen’s entry into the high-end automotive segment and rattle the German luxury car establishment by offering loyal VW owners whose salaries and aspirations have grown beyond the company’s core models, like the Golf, Jetta and Passat, a top-notch luxury sedan. The idea was to retain these customers who typically would transition to a BMW, Audi or Mercedes-Benz, while elevating the overall status of the brand. The 2006 version is indeed hitting showrooms, and noteworthy additions include a more powerful 12-cylinder engine, a four-seater package that pampers rear passengers and an optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) system available across the range.
