The Sony DSR-PD170 uses a newly-developed 1/3-inch 3CCD image system, each producing 380,000 pixels (340,000 effective) in the NTSC model, and 450,000 (400,000 effective) in the PAL model (branded the PD170P). According to a leaked document, the CCDs are capable of both interlace scan and progressive scan, which is useful for recording still images or shooting a moving subject and exporting selected frames to a computer.
