The Sennheiser MKH 30 is one of four professional-grade, studio-recording microphones (MKH 20, MKH 30, MKH 40, MKH 50). In particular, the MKH 30 trades in the MKH 20’s omnidirectional reception for a bi-directional, figure-8 pickup pattern that allows it to pick up sound from both sides of the diaphragm (front/rear), while rejecting sound from the sides. This makes it useful for stereo configurations for live recordings of acoustic/jazz groups, but not useful for harsh, high-SPL environments. In fact, the Sennheiser MKH 30 is recommended primarily for “mid-side” recording setups.
