Highly compressed video with quite a bit of digital artifacting

Edit

The Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1010 is a compact high definition camcorder. Shooting at full 1080p the VPC-HD1010 outputs AVC/H.264 MPEG-4 to its 40MB internal memory or loaded SDHC card (an 8GB card can contain up to 1 hour and 27 minutes of 1080p footage). The VPC-HD1010 takes 4MP JPEG still photos at the same eight resolution modes enabled in video mode. While a considerably advanced HD camcorder, without using an SDHC card, the 40MB onboard flash seems spartan, only allowing a user to record less than a minute of full 1080p footage. The VPC-HD1010 has a respectable battery life of 125 minutes, or just over 2 hours.

Specs
  • CCD: 1/2.5", 4MP
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080 at 30 fps
  • Screen: 2.7" LCD, 230K pixel
  • Zoom: 10x optical, 10x digital
  • Tape type: SDHC (not included) + internal 40MB
  • Interface: touch
  • Battery life: 125 minutes
  • Built in flash

I have owned this camera since mid-July. Resolution and color fidelity/depth are excellent at most quality levels. Very happy with everything about it with one exception. The "full HD" 1080p options play back fine on the camera. However, I have not been able to discover a way to import this high bit rate AVCH264 video to FCP Express or iMovie HD. When I import, the clip shows up is green and audio is present but no video. Lower resolutions (everything up to 1280x720) imports fine and looks spectacular on playback. I have written to Sanyo service three times and gotten an acknowledgment from them each time that they received my question and would respond in 24 hours but no one ever responds. I suspect Sanyo got out in front of themselves, implementing a level 10 MPEG standard before anyone had worked out interfaces for import. If anyone has solved this problem, I'd love to find the answer. And I'd like a phone number for Sanyo corporate......RK

I found warehouse123.com have good price on both HD1010 and DB-L50 battery, I'll recommend buy from them. Regarding headphones suggestion, you may check out the Sony EX76LP.

Did you set the bar too high? This camcorder did make my expectations and I'm very happy with the overall quality. I'm now looking for an extra batteries and headphones. Need to some recommendation.

The 40mb onboard storage is a joke. And the 300 fields (not frames) for slow motion is not available in high definition mode. The only good thing is the 1080p 30fps upgrade.
