Edit

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is a 7 inch tablet running Google's Android mobile operating system (version 2.2 aka Froyo). It uses a customized version (TouchWiz UI 3.0) of Android's user interface similar to the ones used for Samsung's Galaxy S Android handsets. It will most likely have a similar hardware configuration to the smaller Galaxy S handset. With over 60,000 application to choose from in the Android market, a multi-touch on-screen keyboard, gyroscope and accelerometer, the Galaxy Tab competes directly with Apple's iOS-based tablet, the iPad.

The Galaxy Tab as a few advantages over the iPad: the included official Amazon Kindle application for e-books (available on all major platforms), microSD memory expansion slot (up to 32GB per card), front-facing 1.3MP camera as well as 3MP rear camera with flash, Bluetooth 3.0, it is able to make regular phone calls (though without earpiece -> use speakerphone or Bluetooth), higher pixel density display, dual-band (2.4GHz/5Ghz) 802.11n WiFi, HDMI output via the docking station, and a twice as fast graphics processor (PowerVR SGX540)

Features / Specifications
  • 7'' Touch screen display with 1024x600 resolution (higher density than iPad)
  • Android 2.2 with TouchWiz 3.0 User interface
  • 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor
  • PowerVR SGX540 GPU (by far most powerful graphics processor as of 2010)
  • Gyroscope, Geo-magnetic sensor, accelerometer, light sensor
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 2.4GHz/5GHz dual-band WiFi 802.11n
  • Android Market (60,000+ Android apps) and Samsung Apps specifically for Galaxy Tab
  • Swype keyboard preinstalled
  • Full HD video playback
  • 4,000mAh battery (7h movie replay)

Though this looks a lot better than the iPad, I'm still not convinced I need this sort of form factor. That were different if the Galaxy Tab offered a real e-reader screen (in color and multi-touch of course). Perhaps next year's model will bring that? Until then, I'm staying away from this.
