The VSX-521-K is an entry level AV receiver to be released in 2011 along with three other models in Pioneer's mid-level range all of which have multiple HDMI inputs, 3D video playback and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding. This being the base model is the most affordable and does not feature support for apple devices like the others, although all have Bluetooth capability with the optional adapter for streaming audio to the unit from your iPhone or compatible device. It has 5.1 channel audio at 110 watts per channel similar to the VSX-821-K, while the other two have 7.1 channels. All have the same Direct Energy amp section and output power except for the top of the line Apple AirPlay compatible VSX-1021-K which puts out 120 watts per channel. New in these units is Pioneer's own Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration or MCACC system with microphone input jack which can be used to calibrate each speakers size and proximity to the listening position through echo reflection, automatically customizing playback properties according to your room and set up. Also featured is the exclusive Advanced Sound Retriever which will fill in any audio gaps left by lossy audio compression formats like MP3, AAC and WMA, and an Auto Level control will adjust volume between songs of different volume so you don't have to always run to the remote when the next song is too loud.
