Cons

May experience read errors without warning - certain uncommon media formats will display a "No Disc" reading

Has not included a single firmware update since June 2004 - can be frustrating to users considering the large number of operative bugs

Zoom levels are inconsistent amongst non-DVD files - many ".avi" files only offer "Normal" (no zoom) and 2x options

The Philips DVP642/37 is a mid-grade DVD player designed to provide a universal entertainment experience to the average consumer. Philips claims that the DVP642/37 will play virtually any type of disc or file format at a "flawless, true to life picture quality". Obviously the biggest feature of the Philips DVP642/37 is the long list of supported file formats which range from MP3's, WMA's and JPEG's all the way to SVCDs and all types of DVDs and of course the DivX video format.

The DVP642/37 also includes additional features such as a 12-bit/108MHz video processing DAC for a "superior" digital-to-analog conversion, a 24-bit/192KHz audio DAC, dual PAL and NTSC format conversions for use with non-region encoded european discs, high quality analog and digital video and audio outputs, and progressive scan technology which enhances the resolution of the output image for a sharper picture. The DVP642/37 also includes a very unique smart-picture and 4x upsampling feature which enhances video input from all available ports.
