Pros

VR II (vibration reduction) - up to 4 stops of improvement

1 agrees

great if you can only take one lens - eg/ you're on vacation

1 agrees

affordable price

1 agrees

fairly small and light for it's range

1 agrees

great performance - sharp through the focal length range, little vignetting, fairly little distortion

1 agrees

a great walk-around lens - huge focal length range allows the photographer to isolate and capture a large variety of subjects, without changing lenses

Cons

aperture size decreases very quickly - already f/4.2 at 35mm, f/4.8 at 50mm

1 agrees

fairly slow - like most non-professional lenses, starts at f/3.5 and climbs to 5.6, poor for low lighting

1 agrees

DX only - useless if you plan on upgrading to an FX camera

1 agrees

is technically outperformed by the cheaper 18-105mm kit lens, if the slightly shorter range is not a problem

1 agrees

odd 72mm filter size

The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II is an 11x zoom lens with image stabilization. This is a follow-up model to the original 18-200mm VR lens, and has the same features and design with the addition of a zoom lock at 18 mm. This lens is designed exclusively for use with Nikon DX-format cameras. The 18 - 200mm focal range and aperture range of f/3.5 to f/22 offers a wide range of applications for the lens, making it a possible all-in-one solution. The Image Stabilization technology used accounts for up to 4 shutter speeds of movement, enabling handheld shooting and sharper images. Subjects can be as close as 50 cm (or 20 in) from the camera, and the zoom can magnify up to 11.1x for distant shooting. Image quality is enhanced by Super Integrated Coating (SIC), which cuts interference from external light sources to minimize ghosting and flare. Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements work with three aspherical lens elements to improve image quality by bringing down chromatic aberration, astigmatism and other forms of distortion. The diaphragm is made of 7 rounded blades, creating a circular aperture that narrows the field of view and gives backgrounds a natural blur.
