The device features an aluminum body and flexible stand designed to fit any notebook or desktop PC. In addition to high-definition video, the webcam aims to enable clear audio with a digital, noise-canceling microphone. Although Microsoft claims the device is optimized for Windows 7 and Windows Live Messenger, it works with XP and Vista, and with AOL, Yahoo, Skype, and other IM software.

Does this camera encodes HD video in some format say h264 ?

This camera is simply a webcam and doesn't do any video processing itself. To capture HD video from this webcam you'd need software like Debut Video Capture. There is a free version of it available here.

I tried to find what format they use for encoding, but couldn't get a definitive answer. Seems like the software is pretty flexible though, so I imagine it'd be able to use different formats, at least one of which is easily transferable.

That camera does do onboard processing, if that's what you mean. The hardware decoding feature is required for Skype if you're going to chat in HD.
