Had the washer about 8 months and bearings started to go bad (early warning is that it starts to get louder). Repair job without extended warranty is about $1500 and sounds like it is a fairly common problem (occurring on 30% of all these washers?).

Here's how my service went:
- Over 8 hours on the phone with Maytag / Whirlpool
- Had to pick up all of the parts myself from local UPS shipping center.
- Had to make 3 seperate trips to service center to pick up parts
- Had to be home on 2 different occasions (first occasion they didn't have all the parts that were needed, surprise!)
- Finally fixed it on second visit.
- Bought 1 year extended warranty.
- Warranty expired about 1 week ago.
- New bearing failure sounds coming from washing machine.

I REFUSE to give Maytag anymore money for this stupid washing machine, and am just going to let this machine run until it fails, then buy a different brand.

I expected more when I bought an expensive Maytag washing machine, and now I will never buy another Maytag or Whirlpool appliance again.

Hope this helps.

Same here. I bought the same Maytag washer and had same problem with tube bearing. After 8 months bearings went bad (sounded like a jet airplane taking off) and had repaired under warranty, estimated to be $1,200 in repairs, much more than I paid for the washer. Three months after the first bearing replacement, the tube bearings went bad again. It was still covered under warranty and I wrote Whirlpool (manufacturer of Maytag). They called and stated that they did not have an issue with these washers having bearing failures and offered a one year warranty to free. Now the washer has the third tube bearing failure after 2.5 years of owning it. I wrote Whirlpool again to see if they wanted to send out a engineer to examine it in case is is a engineering issue. No reply yet. I own several Whirlpool products and will never purchase a Whirlpool / Maytag washer again.
