Pros

Sound quality isn't bad: mids and upper bass are well-represented and talk radio is quite clear.

Built-in multi-function EQ for sound adjustment--a feature missing from many competing shelf systems.

Cons

To get any adequate bass performance, the unit needs to be placed very close to a wall.

1 agrees

Audio played from any source results in a soft hissing noise accompanying treble.

Button design makes it hard to read which button does what unless you're looking directly at the unit.

AM antennae is quite cumbersome.

Edit

The JVC UX-G28 is small and in comparison to other shelf audio systems, it is cheap.  It plays CD-R/RW with tags, has 10cm speakers, and contains a 2.0 USB host for external devices.  It has some additional features such as front audio input, a clock, a timer, and four sound modes: rock, pop, classic, and jazz.  Its visual design leaves something to be desired -- it is black and shaped like a rectangle.  The lack of extensive features and the uninspired design are easily overwhelmed by its compact size (good for apartments or tight spaces) and its reasonable price.
