The Intel Core i7-965 Extreme is the flagship model of three high-end x86-64 desktop processors. The i7 moniker refers to Intel’s seventh architectural generation, the Nehalem family of processors. Marketed to those seeking maximum performance, the Core i7-965 Extreme features a quad-core chip design with a clock speed frequency of 3.20 GHz with 8MB of L3 cache. One of the largest changes with the Core i7 is what Intel calls Quick Path, an innovation that allows for significantly increased memory bandwidth performance via the triple channel DDR3 memory controller. Intel has also brought back their Hyperthreading technology from the previous single-core Pentium 4 family, which allows the processor to perform two separate operations at the same time. Along with the rest of the Core i7 processors, the i7-965 Extreme requires a new motherboard technology to accommodate these performance enhancing changes; the x58 chipset.
