Pros

Ideal for modern gaming and video editing applications - free of stuttering and significant lag issues

1 agrees

Highs-speed processing capabilities are not likely to require over clocking - most advanced applications with only consume 50-60% of the unit's power

1 agrees

Overclocking is very stable and easy to configure - functions 20-30% higher than normal with little to no issue

1 agrees

HD video rendering is exceptionally fast - processes at a "minute-for-minute" ratio on average

Cons

Built-in fan is very noisy - many users will likely seek out external cooling measures

1 agrees

Requires additional components for ideal operations - compatible motherboard and memory module are mandatory components

1 agrees

Seemingly overpriced for the feature set - offers only a slight increase in speed and overall capabilities as compared to i7 units 1/3 of the price

The Intel Core i7-965 Extreme is the flagship model of three high-end x86-64 desktop processors. The i7 moniker refers to Intel’s seventh architectural generation, the Nehalem family of processors. Marketed to those seeking maximum performance, the Core i7-965 Extreme features a quad-core chip design with a clock speed frequency of 3.20 GHz with 8MB of L3 cache. One of the largest changes with the Core i7 is what Intel calls Quick Path, an innovation that allows for significantly increased memory bandwidth performance via the triple channel DDR3 memory controller. Intel has also brought back their Hyperthreading technology from the previous single-core Pentium 4 family, which allows the processor to perform two separate operations at the same time. Along with the rest of the Core i7 processors, the i7-965 Extreme requires a new motherboard technology to accommodate these performance enhancing changes; the x58 chipset.

Features

  • 45 nanometer technology

  • 4 processing cores at 3.20GHz

  • simultaneous multi-threading technology (up to 8 processing threads)

  • 32 KB instruction + 32 KB data L1 cache per core
  • 256 KB L2 cache per core
  • 8 MB L3 cache shared by all 4 cores

  • triple channel DDR3 memory support up to 1066MHz

  • Intel Turbo Boost, Intel Speedstep and Intel 64 technology
