The aera 796 is a touchscreen aircraft GPS unit from Garmin that offers a step-up from the company's aera 795 model. Utilizing Garmin's 3D Vision technology, this model provides pilots with a virtual recreation of their surroundings for increased safety and directional accuracy. Sliding a finger across the screen to toggle portrait and landscape orientation views, users can view land and water features, airport runways, signposts and more. Because the unit's GPS engine updates at an average rate of 5 times per second, forward-looking terrain avoidance is made possible to warn fliers of towers or other obstacles via amber and red graphic overlays. The 796's 7-inch sunlight-readable display provides clear visibility at a variety of viewing angles, with 4 touch controls at the bottom of the unit governing primary commands like "Menu", "Back", "Nearest" and "Direct-to". U.S. and Jeppesen-style flight charts can be quickly called up to serve as a Class I or II electronic flight bag, comprising VFR, IFR and IRF map data alongside a "Trackpad" feature that allows users to manually enter clearance and angle data on the fly. The inclusion of a GXM 40 antenna allows the 796 to receive XM satellite radio and weather updates including turbulence and icing forecasts, topical map data, flight restrictions and more. In addition, SafeTaxi technology provides additional details when approaching a public airport or other crowded airspace, while 2 serial ports enable connectivity to transponders and other external devices.
