The Canon SD970 IS is a point-and-shoot digital camera from Canon's Digital ELPH series and is a step up from the SD960 for 2009.  Like the SD960, the camera features a 12.1 megapixel sensor, records HD video in 720p and has a mini-HDMI port to allow direct connection to an HDTV.  It includes a DIGIC 4 Image Processor that delivers face detection technology and has a face detection self timer for taking self portraits and group shots.  The SD970 IS has a 35mm wide-angle lens that offers 5x optical and 4x digital zoom compared to the 4x optical zoom of the SD960 and includes Canon's optical image stabilizer technology for clear closeup shots.  It is designed with a 3" PureColor LCD display with a wide viewing angle and an anti-glare and anti-scratch coating which is larger than the 2.8" screen of the SD960.  The camera also has an intelligent AUTO feature, zoom blur and creative light effects, blink detection, and active display technologies.  The SD970 IS is expected to be released in April 2009.
