small and light for a 55-250mm lens

IS makes composition at 250mm much easier, nice to work with

images are sharp through the center and edge to edge

image stabilized - required for such a slow lens

Cons

low light focus is noticeably slow, have to plan ahead a little for it in the moment

2 agree

the light weight and finish on the plastic feel cheap

2 agree

front of lens rotates and moves in and out a lot while focusing, can make you have to recompose the shot sometimes

2 agree

rear lens cap falls off, plastic flanges on the back can't seem to hold any lens cap

1 agrees

slow f/4-5.6 - hard to work with in low light, more difficult to separate subject from their background

1 agrees

optically not the best - not the sharpest even stopped down, noticeable vignetting, geometrical distortion

1 agrees

doesn't come with a lens hood

1 agrees

plastic lens mount

Edit

The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS is a compact and light telephoto zoom lens featuring a wide focal range that accommodates many situations, including portraits, sports, landscapes, etc. Due to its ES-F configuration, the unit is only compatible with Canon APS-C/1.6x FOVCF bodies. Critics have noted the unit’s bad build, in that the lens mount is plastic, and the focus ring is not all that smooth. Featured is a Micro Motor AF system that’s been touted as slow but accurate, a narrow aperture, and a short Minimum Focus Distance and yields a high Maximum Magnification. There is no Full Time Manual focusing, however. Additional features include a 4-stop Image Stabilizer with vertical and horizontal auto-panning detection, and a light weight frame. Critics say though the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS doesn’t offer the greatest in image quality and build, it does host an extremely “inexpensive” price.
