The Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro is a lens designed for photography of smaller subjects in a compact design. This is the smallest Canon Macro lens, weighing just 280 grams and being 63 mm long. The focal length is 50mm, and some magnification is used on smaller subjects allowing 0.5x focus. A front group linear extension system lengthens the lens to gain proper focus and uses AFD. This design does not use ultrasonic focusing, however, and so is somewhat noisy. Lens construction uses 9 elements, and a floating optical system ensures high quality photos even when very close to the subject. The Life Size Converter EF optional accessory allows focusing down to life size (1:1), and increases the distance the camera can be from the subject.
