The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is a mid-range lens built to capture crisp images in available light. This is a lower priced alternative to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM, with a depth of field that isn't quite as narrow and a maximum aperture of f/1.4 instead of f/1.2. Even at this aperture, however, good quality available-light shooting is possible. This is the only lens in the EF series use Micro USM for fast focus while still providing a full-time manual focus as well. Astigmatism is avoided through the use of 2 high-refraction lens elements and Gaussian optics, helping to reduce flare that digital cameras tend to be prone to. The compact 50.5 mm length makes the lens very portable, and the lens works well with an optional zoom for shooting in low-light conditions.
