The Canon EF 35mm f/2 is one of Canon's low-cost lenses. Canon promotes their EF line of lenses as broadening the angle of view and increasing the depth of field by bringing more area into focus. The EF 35mm f/2 has a minimum focusing distance of 0.8 feet (25cm), which means that you can get close to the subject and still get a natural wide-angle effect. Though the EF 35mm f/2 has the same 35mm focal length as the high-end EF 35mm f/1.4 USM, the EF 35mm f/2 does not have the same caliber of features. The f/2 maximum aperture of this lens allows you to get depth of field effects, but not to the same narrowness as the f/1.4 aperture of the EF 35mm f/1.4 USM. The five-blade diaphragm of the EF 35mm f/2 will create background blur in portraits, but not as much as the eight-blade diaphragm of the EF 35mm. Instead of the USM motor rear focusing system of the EF 35mm f/1.4 USM, the Canon EF 35mm f/2 has a linear extension system with an AFD motor.
