Edit

The B&W DS8S is a rear surround speaker that is designed to be used as either a monopole or dipole design, and is a part of Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) top of the line 800 series of home audio speakers. In order to accomodate modern surround sound system, speakers are usually required at the side, or rear of the room.  The DS8S has been designed to be used in either configuration.  When being used in monopole mode, the DS8S acts as a 2-way system with its front 7" kevlar cone used as a bass/midrange driver and the front 1" aluminum dome tweeter used for highs.  In monopole mode, it should be placed at the rear of the room giving more directional information required for surround.  In dipole mode, the front tweeter is shut-off and a 4" Kevlar midrange and 1" aluminum dome tweeter on each side are used for mids and highs, while the front facing 7" kevlar cone is now only used for bass.  In this mode, the DS8S acts as a 3-way and gives a more cinematic feel when placed at the sides of a room.  Switching between the two modes can be done with a front mounted switch, or by using a 12V trigger. The tweeters are contained in Nautilus tapering tubes, which are designed to only project sound through a hollow pole magnet frontwards, and are tapered towards the rear to eliminate reflections off the rear of the cabinet producing unwanted sound effects. The cabinet is avaialable in three real wood veneers: cherrywood, rosenut and black ash; and comes with a removable black cloth grill for each of the 3 sides.
