The B&W DS7 is an on-wall surround speaker which features monopole and dipole operation, and is a part of Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) near top of the line 700 series of home audio speakers.  In order to accomodate modern surround sound system, speakers are usually required at the side, or rear of the room.  The DS7 has been designed to be used in either configuration.  When being used in monopole mode, the DS7 uses its front 6.5" kevlar cone used as a bass/midrange driver and the front 1" allow dome tweeter used for highs.  In monopole mode, it should be placed at the rear of the room giving more directional information required for surround.  In dipole mode, the front tweeter is shut-off and one 4" driver on each side (x2) is used for mids and highs, while the front facing 6.5" kevlar cone is now only used for bass.  In this mode, the two side speakers are connected out of phase making the listener unaware of their location, giving a more cinematic feel when placed at the sides of a room.  Switching between the two modes can be done with a front mounted switch, or by using a 12V trigger. The tweeter is contained in Nautilus tapering tubes, which is designed to only project sound through a hollow pole magnet frontwards, and is tapered towards the rear to eliminate reflections off the rear of the cabinet producing unwanted sound effects. The B&W DS7 is available in black or white, with a removable black or white grill cloth for each side.
