The B&W DS3 is the only surround speaker available in Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) affordable high-end 600 series of home audio speakers. When setting up a surround system, a choice needs to be made whether your rear speakers provide a more direct locational sound, or a diffuse cinematic sound that fully envelopes the listener. This depends on the room size and what material is being listened to.  The B&W DS3 can be switched between monopole and dipole mode, giving a more direct or diffuse sound, respectively.  Unlike the 700 or 800 series center channels, both modes of operation use the same cones.  Bass is provided by a 5" woven Kevlar cone, mids by a pair of 3" side mounted cones and the highs are handled by a 1" aluminum dome tweeter.  The tweeter is contained in a Nautilus tapering tube, which is designed to only project sound through a hollow pole magnet frontwards, and is tapered towards the rear to eliminate reflections off the rear of the cabinet producing unwanted sound effects. The B&W DS3 is available in black or white with a removable grill cloth, and is sold as a pair for $850 or as the rear speakers in the 683 home theatre system.
