The B&W 703 is the largest floor-standing main speakers available in Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) near top of the line 700 series of home audio speakers. One feature common to the lower model 704 and 705 is the single piece sloping top and front baffle. This produces a stronger cabinet and also eliminates a sharp edge, which would cause sound diffraction from the sound driver. The two 6.5" paper/Kevlar cones have a very stiff mushroom design which work in parallel with a Flowport-tuned cavity to handle bass frequencies. These speakers are designed to be setup free from walls, but if they are placed near a wall, the unnatural increase in bass level can be offset by plugging the ports with the provided foam plugs. Unlike lower models, the 6" woven Kevlar cone is exclusively used for midrange frequencies, thanks to the twin bass drivers, and is mounted in its own isolated cavity within the main cabinet. The woven Kevlar midrange cone has FST technology, which essentially uses a foam ring allowing the cone to float freely for an improved cone response. Sitting on top of the main cabinet is a free-mounted 1" alloy dome tweeter which is contained in a Nautilus tapering tube. This tweeter-on-top design eliminates reflections that may occur if the driver where placed in a conventional cabinet. The cabinet is avaialable in five real wood veneers: cherry, rosenut, maple, walnut and black ash; comes with a removable black cloth grill and is individudally for $1,650.
