Seems to fairly common issue with the laptop emitting a large puff of smoke and dying after a few months of use.

Ridiculously poor battery life even for a high-performance laptop.

The Asus N71Jq is an N Series laptop dsigned to combat the trend of sub-standard laptop audio. Like its predecessor, the N73Jn, the N71Jq hosts SonicMaster sound technology (developed by ASUS’s ‘Golden Ear’ team in conjunction with Bang & Olufsen) with large speaker chambers, more powerful amplifiers, and enhanced software processing. Otherwise it improves from its counterpart by incorporating superior components such as an Intel Core i7-720M (1.6GHz) processor and two 500GB 5400rpm SATA drives. It does however trade in Nvidia Optimus technology for a more standard ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 (1GB) graphics module instead. Everything else is the same, including 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 17.3” widescreen display.

Laptop motherboard died 3 weeks after purchase, Took it to ASUS Service Center, met another N61JQ owner who had the same problem 2 weeks after purchase and was there for a second warranty job in under 1 month. First ASUS product I have owned in 10 years that has caused problems, hopefully just a bad batch.

Fast Laptop, plays games well, runs virtual machines good, speakers are good quality and loud, i7 quad core, 4 gig ddr3ram and USB3 for ~$1200 AUD is much better value for money compared to Dell / HP / Toshiba with a good name.
