The AMD Radeon HD 6870 is a mid-range to high-end DirectX 11-capable discrete graphics processor similar to the AMD Radeon HD 6850. Like the 6850, the 6870 is meant to provide performance similar to its 5000-series counterpart. The 6870 sports a much higher core clock speed than the 6850 (900MHz as opposed to 775MHz) as well as a greater number of texture and shader units. Otherwise, the two 6000-series cards sport similar features, including the newest standards of DisplayPort and HDMI at the time of release, Eyefinity technology and CrossFireX technology.
The Radeon HD 6870 sports DisplayPort 1.2 technology which boasts a higher maximum display resolution than previous DisplayPort standards while also allowing users to connect multiple monitors together from a single DisplayPort 1.2 output. Its HDMI 1.4a support allows the 6870 to support all current standards of 3D media at the time of its release as well as Audio Return Channel which supports two-way audio transmission over HDMI. Meanwhile, the 6870's Eyefinity technology allows it to support up to three displays simultaneously while its CrossFireX technology allows up to four 6870s to run in tandem for greater performance.
