The AMD Radeon HD 6850 is a mid-range DirectX 11-capable discrete graphics processor designed to offer similar performance to the ATI Radeon HD 5850. Although it has fewer transistors as well as texture and shader units, the 6850 offers greater efficiency while a higher core clock speed (775MHz as opposed to 725MHz) ensures similar performance while gaming. Otherwise, the 6850 sports updated DisplayPort and HDMI technology while also offering standard ATI CrossFireX and Eyefinity technology.

The Radeon HD 6850 boasts the new DisplayPort 1.2 specification which features greater output resolution capability than previous DisplayPort versions while also allowing users to daisy-chain multiple monitors from a single output. Its support for HDMI 1.4a allows the 6850 to support all standard forms of 3D media at the time of its release while also offering Audio Return Channel technology which allows for two-way audio transmission over HDMI. Meanwhile, the 6850's Eyefinity technology allows it to operate up to three monitors simultaneously while its CrossFireX technology allows up to four identical 6850s to run simultaneously for greatly boosted performance.
